When I was a little girl, I LOVED pom poms (don’t all kids?). Then somewhere around junior high, they became decidedly uncool. Thankfully, they’re trendy again! A dear friend of mine makes the most beautiful pom pom creations I’ve every seen over at Poppy Joy Pom Pom’s, and I have to give her all the credit for the inspiration for this post!
And with Spring break coming up for the kids, rainy days, and of course a pandemic, pom pom crafts are a great little activity to do with the kids while we’re stuck at home.
Supplies
- Pom Pom Maker
- Thick Yarn like Wool-Ease or Bernat
- Sharp Scissors
- Key Ring (optional)
Pom pom makers come in a variety of sizes. For this tutorial, I’m using the second largest, aqua frame.
STEP 1:
Fully open the frame by pulling the white arms out. Start on the inside of the frame and wrap your yarn around the arc. Keep wrapping back and forth until the arc is full. The tighter and fuller you wrap the yarn, the fuller and fluffier your pom pom will be! You want that inner arc to be as full as possible! (See photo #3).
STEP 2:
Next you’ll do the same thing on the other side. If you want to add more than one colour to your pom pom, just do one section at a time, leaving room for the other colours at the end. Be sure to still fill in that arc as much as possible!
STEP 3:
Once you’ve filled both sides, fold the arms of the frame back into the center. You’ll now have a circle, like this:
STEP 4:
With a sharp pair of scissors, cut the loops all the way around the center, using the frame’s center groove as a guide. Check it over and make sure you haven’t missed any loops!
STEP 5:
Once you’ve cut through all the loops, cut a long strand of yarn from the skein to tie it all together around the center. Make sure you tie the center as tight as possible, since this is what gives your pom pom its stability. If you’re knot isn’t tight enough, it’ll fall apart!
STEP 6:
Now you can pull those arms open again and separate the frame. Voila! You’ve just made a pom pom! Hold your pom pom by the tails and carefully trim away the even strands all the way around to give it that nice round shape.
STEP 7:
Proudly display your pom pom as an accessory 🙂
The possibilities are endless! Happy pom pom creating!
